What is NES?
NES stands for New Education System, a transformative model introduced by HISD to dramatically improve instruction in the district’s highest-need schools.
Key Elements of NES
Rigorous Instruction & Curriculum
NES campuses follow a structured instructional framework, including 45-minute core lessons followed by daily "Demonstrations of Learning" (DOLs)—quizzes used to gauge student mastery level and deliver differentiated support.
Expanded Learning Opportunities
Beyond core subjects, students engage in Art of Thinking courses for critical thinking, elective options like photography and gardening (often through Dyad contractors), and team-based enrichment experiences or travel for eligible students.
Longer School Hours & Extended Support
NES campuses typically open earlier (often by 6:30 AM) and extend beyond school hours for after-school care.
